Custom Storage Barn...
After completing my first gondola, I knew I needed a place to store and maintain the locomotive & rolling stock. After researching different building designs and learning about the maintenance required for a steamer, I knew I needed a steaming bay attached to my storage shed. So I started digging. Once the hole was dug (so tracks would run at waist height), I poured cement walls to hold back the dirt. I dug out two holes inside the pit directly under the tracks so I could pour cement anchors for posts. I attached the support posts to 2x8 beams that run under the ties. The loco & tender will rest on top. Next, I finished framing the barn walls & roof. Then T1-11 plywood sides where cut and installed. Next we (my wife Noel & I) painted the whole shed & added trim. We finished with the sign & light. I'm still working on the roof and have more gravel to add before I can check this barn off as finished. I have 200' of new rail on order now and due to arrive within 2 weeks. I also have new rolling stock! Check back soon for the completion of this section. Update: 11/26/2010 Winter has set in fast and it's damn cold out. Avg. temps around 30 - 40f. I have put the 5/8" roof on, but haven't had the funds to purchase the roofing shingles and under lament yet. That will have to be a project for next year. I have covered the plywood roof with a large tarp for the winter. This will hopefully keep any water / snow off my rolling stock and tools. Update: 4/22/2011 Warm weather is finally here! And I've already started... First I removed and sawed up a large branch that fell on top of the train shed. A large tree also uprooted over the main line switch, so that tree was sawed down. As it came down, it fell onto the points, so I had to replace a few feet of track. This wasn't a big problem as I wanted to add a few feet between the frog & the points. Here is the page with the winter damage pics. I'll be finishing the roof in the next few weeks as I'm finishing up with the repairs / extension of the main line switch. I'll add a pic of the switch repair this weekend. Update: 6/1/2011 I've been busy! 2nd switch is repaired and more track is down. I've laid the roofing paper and drip edge and only need to do the shingles. Should be done very soon. Trucks have arrived for the hopper and I've loaded it with the tie gravel. Fun Fun Fun! My 1st switch (with the spring) isn't working well and will get a repair / remake soon. |
