Landscaping & Grades...
One of the most important parts of pre-pairing your yard for track laying is leveling out the right-of-way (grading). For a smooth, comfortable ride with minimal derailments, you'll want to level so there is no dips, drops or bumps along the right-of-way. If you need to climb or descend a grade, keep a max grade of 3% (3' for every 100'). On the Old Pine Railroad, we needed to cut & fill several areas along the right-of-way to ensure a smooth ride. Once we've roughly leveled everything out, we'll lay weed barrier then add about 1" of gravel. Next we'll tamp the gravel down with a hand tamper then start laying sections of track. Once the track is down, we'll add gravel between the ties and give everything a final leveling. Be creative with landscaping around your right-of-way. We used stone retaining walls, plants and will soon add scale buildings and a water tower. This will give a fun, realistic appearance when riding. |
